The ring of ten bells at The Abbey were cast in 1967 at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in London.  They replaced a ring of eight bells that had been installed in 1903.  They are considered by ringers to be an excellent example of the bell founder’s work and were reputedly cast using the same moulds as those used for the bells at Westminster Abbey. In 2024, the bells were silent for six weeks as the bells underwent a major overhaul with the result that they are easier to ring and can be struck more accurately.

Bellringing

A Symphony
of History & Skill

Our band are drawn from Wymondham and the surrounding areas, with ringers who have been members of the band for over forty years and some who have moved into the area in the last few years. All are welcome to join us. Our regular ringing times are 9.50 to 10.30 on Sunday mornings and 7.30 to 9.00 on Tuesday evenings. We also try to ring a quarter peal (50 minutes of continuous ringing) for Evensong on the first Sunday of the month. In addition, we ring for local and national occasions, to Ring Out the Old Year and to Ring In the New Year and for family occasions within the local community, for example, for weddings.

As well as success in local striking competitions, three times winners in the last four years, we have an annual outing where we ring at 5 or 6 towers a little further away from home: in 2024 we visited South Cambridgeshire and 2025 South Norfolk, areas where members of the band learned to ring. We also provide ringers to support other local practices and support monthly quarter peals through the local Learning Hub. During the Summer of 2025, the ringing room was painted by members of the band, the first time this task had been embarked upon since 1963.

Join The Ringers

We welcome visitors to our practice night, whatever their ringing experience. Anyone wishing to learn more about ringing, and, perhaps, to learn to ring can arrange a visit using the ‘contact us’ button below. Even should you only wish to have the experience of climbing the 92 steps to watch what goes on in the tower, please do join us to enjoy the distinctly English art of change ringing.

  • Special Occasions & Celebrations

Beyond the regular call to worship, our bells play a significant role in community celebrations, weddings, festivals, and remembrance events. They serve as a beacon, drawing the community together in moments of joy, sorrow, and reflection.

  • Preserving the Tradition

Bellringing is more than just a pastime; it's a vital part of Wymondham Abbey's heritage. Through maintenance, restoration efforts, and the dedication of our ringers, we ensure that this beautiful tradition continues to thrive for generations to come.

Experience the magic of bellringing for yourself. Whether you’re drawn by the allure of the music, the history, or the camaraderie, there’s a place for you in the bell tower.
