Thursdays in Lent at 7pm, followed by hot chocolate and fruit loaf. All are welcome!
Godly Reading is based on the ancient monastic practice which would have happened daily in days when the Abbey was a monastery; it would have been known then as lectio divina. It’s a form of praying with the Bible, allowing a passage to sink deeply into your heart and mind by listening to it slowly and meditating quietly.
In these sessions we will gather in the Lady Chapel and focus on texts which are traditionally heard during Lent. We will listen to a passage read several times, interspersed with a few moments of silence, then have the chance to respond if a word or phrase has particularly caught the imagination or struck a chord.
This is quite different from a bible study or discussion group: it is more like a time of prayer. Each session will last about 20-30 minutes, and we then relax and chat over hot chocolate and fruit loaf.
There will be 6 sessions:
• 6 March The Temptations of Christ (Luke 4.1-13)
• 13 March The city that kills the prophets’ (Luke 13.31-end)
• 20 March The fruitless fig tree (Luke 13.1-9)
• 27 March The message of reconciliation (2 Cor 5.16-21)
• 3 April Mary anoints Jesus’ feet (John 12.1-8)
• 10 April Jesus’ Entry into Jerusalem (Luke 19.28-40)
